EGIED SIMONS
Egied Simons was born in Wouw in 1958. During 1978-1983 he was trained as a teacher of crafts and drawing at Delft. Midway he left for one year to travel in Northern, Central and Southern America. Upon his return he finished his training and continued to study at the Academie van Beeldende Kunsten (Academy of Arts) at Rotterdam. Here he specialized in sculpting and photography. In 1985 he received the "Aanmoedigingsprijs" (incentive price) for his photoworks. In 1986 his daughter Nienke was born and one year later he graduated from the Academy.
During the next years he received two scholarships and two grants. As a visual artist he is fascinated by sculptural concepts like space, light, water and perception. In the attempt to give form to such immaterial concepts, photography is a suitable medium for him. Spatial and social structures and processes are the main themes of Egied's work, sometimes leading to interventions in public space. He is interested in participating in (international) projects based on certain themes, locations and communities.
Egied Simons lives in a lively part of the northern area of Rotterdam, together with Petra van der Ham. His studio is located near the center of Rotterdam, where interested parties are always welcome to visit.
